Do-it-yourselfers in Athens will soon have some free assistance. The Athens Regional Library and LEAD Athens are working together to create the ACC Tool Library. The goal of the effort is to provide members of the community with tools they need, that they might not otherwise be able to afford or have access to. Project Director Mike Hodges explains how it works.
"The concept is essentially to offer to the citizens of Athens-Clarke County, tools that are free to access with your library card, just like you would access a book at the library," said Hodges. "And then have that tool available to you without the economic expense of trying to buy it for yourself, or finding a friend that may have one that they're willing to loan to you."
Hodges says more donations are needed for the library.
“We’re accepting donations from anyone and everyone through our GoFundMe page. If you go to GoFundMe and type in Athens-Clarke County Tool Library, you’ll find our page and it gives you some more information and we accept any and all donations. Even $5 will go a long way toward helping us get this initial round of tools that we can start this project with,” said Hodges.
Hodges says basic tools will be available, but they also want to offer items including air compressors, large extension ladders and other big-ticket items.
The crowdfunding campaign will run until March 2nd and the Tool Library is schedule to open in April.
