Authorities have released the name of the man killed in a collision on Lexington Road this morning. Athens-Clarke County Police Department Spokesperson Epifanio Rodriguez says William Melendez, of Athens went through the center turn lane and was traveling west on Lexington Road in the east bound lane for unknown reasons.
A tractor-trailer traveling in the east bound lane tried to avoid the SUV Melendez was driving, but the driver was unable to do so. The vehicles collided head on. The collision happened shortly before 10 am near Mimosa Drive.
An off-duty state trooper notified authorities about the collision.
