Inaugural Medical Class Graduates

Ten doctors from Athens’ first medical residency program the inaugural class of the have been recognized for finishing their three-year residency program.

The Medical College of Georgia at the Augusta University / University of Georgia Medical Partnership Internal Residency Program became the first residency of its kind in in Athens in 2014. The three year program concentrates on producing community-based physicians. Since the inception of the Medical Partnership residency program, another program has been established at Piedmont Athens Regional bringing an additional 15 medical residents to the Athens community each year. The total number of resident positions in Athens is now 85.

Martin Matheny was formerly WUGA's Program Director and a host and producer of our local news program 'Athens News Matters.' He started at WUGA in 2012 as a part-time classical music host and still hosts WUGA's longest-running local program 'Night Music' which was heard on WUGA and GPB Classical. He is now the Morning Edition Host for Delaware First Media.
