Secret recording sets Georgia GOP gubernatorial debate stage

More verbal fireworks can be expected in a debate between the two Republicans battling to become Georgia's governor.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Brian Kemp meet Thursday evening in Atlanta after Kemp's campaign released a secretly-recorded audio snippet where Cagle is heard saying the primary contest was about "who could be the craziest."

Cagle's campaign decried the release by Kemp as "dirty politics."

Talk of the recording will likely resurface in the debate, as Kemp seeks to ride the momentum it brought him. Cagle likely will seek to make the conversation about the ethics of releasing a secretly-recorded private conversation.

The GOP runoff will be decided July 24. The winner will face Democrat Stacey Abrams in November.
The debate will be televised live by Georgia Public Broadcasting.
