Georgia Ranking on WalletHub 2018 List of Best and Worst States for Health Care

WalletHub

The peach state is near the bottom of the barrel when it comes to healthcare. The personal finance website WalletHub studied all 50 states and the District of Columbia to come up with its list of 2018’s Best and Worst States for Health Care. Analyst Jill Gonzalez says Georgia did not fare well.

“Unfortunately, it does not,” according to Gonzalez. “We looked at healthcare, through its costs, so that’s out-of-pocket spending and how much a typical doctor or dentist visit would cost; we also look at access, mainly dealing with insured rates and how many physicians there are per capita; and finally, what the two of these combined can mean.”

Gonzalez says several factors were considered in determining the list.

“What are the health outcomes for people in Georgia, what’s the average life expectancy, what are the cancer, heart disease, diabetes rates?  Georgia, unfortunately, could do better across the board.”

The CDC estimates just over 88 percent of the population has access to medical care. However, recent data by WalletHub shows the rate is far lower.

“Only about 70 percent of adults in Georgia are insured. It really does have to work to get more people insured. That’s where Georgia really has the most ground to make up.

Georgia was 2018’s 9th worst state on the list. Others faring poorly, North Carolina, Arkansas, Alaska, Mississippi, and Louisiana, which was dead last on the list, while Vermont was the top-rated state on the list.
