Georgia Unemployment Rate Sets Record in September

Georgia continues to set records when it comes to jobs numbers. State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler’s office released the numbers today. Butler says the state’s unemployment dipped to 3.7 percent in September, a figure not seen since May 2001.

“Not only that but we did see the state actually show a creation of about 15,000 jobs which is very good job growth over the month,” Butler said. “Not only that, but we saw 1900 individuals actually gain employment.”

In addition, Georgia continues to add jobs. Butler says numbers have been strong for some time now; and for September, it’s more of the same.

“When you see what we’ve been able to do this year, you know the previous two years we had some very good numbers, but this year, quite frankly, has exceeded a lot of people’s expectations,” according to Butler.

The commissioner says the numbers are positive in several different categories.

“When you take a look at the fact that we’ve been able to set records almost every single month this year when it comes to employment and we’ve also seen great job growth so far this year. Right now we’ve got over 100,000 jobs that we’ve seen grown over the year, which has far exceeded anybody’s prediction of what Georgia was going to do.”

Butler says that bodes well for the state’s future.

“It just goes to show that Georgia’s economy was a lot stronger than what a lot if individuals thought it was going to be and I continue to see us going in the same direction.”
