Athens Gingerbread Guild Holding Gingerbread House Competition

An Athens organization is hoping to tap into the creativity of members of the community for a creative fundraiser.  Gingerbread Guild member Christine Mallozzi explains how those interested can get involved.

“We’re a group of community members who have pulled together to establish an annual winter holiday tradition that’s starting this year in the gingerbread house competition and display that will be open to the public,” according to Mallozzi. “Our drive is to open these events to the diverse population of Athens’ community and to support a local nonprofit.”

Guild member Johanna Nichol says money from the inaugural event is supporting local youth.

“This year we’re partnering with the Athens Land Trust and specifically with their Young Urban Builders program, “ Nichol said. “I feel like it’s a really good fit, Young Urban Builders, but with building gingerbread houses, so we’ll see where it goes, but that’s what we’re doing this year.”

Those submitting entries do not have to build typical gingerbread houses.

“It doesn’t have to be a house specially, but it has to be 100% edible and there are size requirements that they can find on our website.”

Nichol says the project is dependent on the imagination of the Athens community.

“We’re only going to be as exciting as the houses that are submitted for sure, so we’re depending on people to pull out all the stops and make something exciting.”

Early bird entries are due by Monday November 26th, the deadline to enter is Saturday, December 1st.

Early bird entry fees are $25, later entries will cost $30.  For more information, visit: www.gingerbreadguild.org
