Artist Elio Mercado has been chosen to paint the new Hot Corner Legacy Mural on the Morton Building, which will be unveiled at the Hot Corner Festival in June.
Mercado, who is based in Florida, was one of 40 applicants who sent designs to the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission, and has over five years of experience in public art and mural projects.
The panel who chose Mercado was made up of various community members who have ties to Hot Corner and the chosen during a blind selection process.
“We show the designs to the selection panel, we don’t tell them who did them or where they came from,” Tatiana Veneruso, ACAC administrative assistant said. “The one thing we’ll probably reveal is whether or not they’ve done murals before.”
The mural will be a visual representation of the history of Hot Corner.
