ACCPD Arrest Man Accused of Stealing Ambulance, Burglarizing Store

Athens Police have arrested a man accused in a crime spree including the theft of an ambulance. According to a media release, police 41-year old Edward Wessinger is facing multiple vehicular related charges and burglary in incidents that happened just after midnight on Sunday, March 24th.

Police responded to a Vehicle Theft call at St. Mary’s Hospital. The driver told police the ambulance was stolen while he was waiting inside the hospital for a patient. Police located the abandoned vehicle on West Broad Street. Video showed the ambulance running multiple stop lights, striking several vehicles and jumping a number of curbs before stopping.

Later that morning, police responded to a Burglary call at a Hawthorne Avenue drug store. While searching the store, officers found Wessinger inside.

After reviewing evidence police determined he was also responsible for stealing the ambulance. He is charged with Theft by Taking Motor Vehicle, Driving While License Suspended or Revoked, DUI and Reckless Driving.
