Athens Man Charged with Multiple Counts After Assaulting Woman

A suspect in custody after Athens police responded to an aggravated assault in progress.

According to a media release from the department, officers arrives and forced entry into an apartment to prevent the woman inside from being harmed.

Officers arrived at the residence on International Drive around 11:35 p.m. on March, 24.  

Several callers saw a man, later identified as 20-year-old Shimobi Obijuru, holding a knife to the victim’s throat and forcing her into an apartment.

Officers knocked and announced their presence several times, but no one responded.

Due to concerns about the safety of the victim, they forced entry into the apartment.

They detained Obijuru at the scene and made contact with the woman, who had minor injuries.

Obijuru was taken to the Clarke County Jail and charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, False Imprisonment, Battery and Simple Battery.
