Athens Area Homeless Shelter to Host 16th Annual Fundraiser

Athens Area Homeless Shelter

An Athens nonprofit aimed at helping homeless families is hosting its annual fall fundraiser this weekend. The Athens Area Homeless Shelter is holding the 16th Annual Harvest for the Homeless.

Shea Post is Executive Director at the facility.

"It is our major annual fundraiser of the year, and it's pretty important to our budget," she says.

The night will feature food, drinks, a silent auction and music from Mary Sigalas and the Hot Hotty-Hots. This year, the organization is awarding two volunteers with the first Golden Award. They are Susan McCount, who bakes birthday cakes for each child in the shelter, and Tom Scott, who helped to build the organization’s second site.

In addition, the shelter is launching the new Bridge to Home program.

"It's a partnership with Athens Tech where we will be providing shelter to people experiencing homelessness while the parent is enrolled in Athens Tech for the duration of their enrollment," Post says.

Due to a technicality because the Athens Area Homeless Shelter is providing long-term assistance for recipients through the program, the organization is losing $60,000 in state funds.

The event is Friday, Nov. 8, at the Cotton Press from 6:30 to 10 pm.
