Victim in Fatal Car Accident Identified

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is releasing the name of the person killed in a fatal accident Saturday. The victim has been identified as 81-year old Joe Louis Mattox of Arnoldsville, Georgia.

According to a department media release, around 10:45 Saturday morning, a jeep being driven by a 19-year old male was traveling north on US29 in the right hand lane. At about the same time, a 1993 Buick Regal, being driven by Mattox, was traveling westbound on Harve Mathis Road.

Police say Mattox pulled out in front of the Jeep while attempting to cross the road. The Jeep collided with his car.

Mattox was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the Regal, a 77-year old woman,  had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The 19-year old driver of the Jeep sustained a minor injury and a passenger, a 19-yar old woman, had a broken hand.

They arranged for their own transportation to a local hospital.

The incident remains under investigation by the department’s Traffic unit.
