ACC Comissioner Jerry NeSmith Dies at 71

District 6 Commissioner Jerry NeSmith has died. The ACCPD and Clarke County Coroner’s Office is investigating the death, which appears to be accidental. The ACC Government issued a statement regarding NeSmith’s death:

With great sadness, the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government announces that District 6 Commissioner Jerry NeSmith has died. Additional details will be forthcoming in the days ahead.

“We are heartbroken to learn of Commissioner NeSmith’s tragic passing,” said Mayor Kelly Girtz. “Jerry was a fierce advocate for the businesses and residents of his district, the Westside of Athens, the Athens Farmers Market, Advantage Behavioral Health Systems, the Greenway, and the Atlanta Highway corridor. His passion and energy will be sorely missed in this community. Our condolences go out to his friends and family during this unbelievably difficult time.”
