Historic Athens held a livecast Tuesday afternoon, in an effort to garner support for saving the Campbell Lane building on the West Broad School site.
Executive Director Tommy Valentine says the site isn’t just historic, by meeting the 50-year standard, it is also significant, meeting three different categories, the first is culturally.
“This is a campus that has stood the test of time and that was a safe haven for Black education during the years where there was a heavy Klan presence in Athens, Georgia,” according to Valentine. “During the years where Athens was not even remotely, a safe place to be an African American member of our community.”
Valentine says the building is also significant architecturally and archeologically.
