AADM: "Fight is Not Over"

In a press release on Tuesday, the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement emphasized that “the fight is not over" in ensuring that expectations are met in the operations of the Public Safety Civilian Oversight Board.

A final proposal for the Oversight Board was unanimously approved by the Mayor and Commission on November 2nd after being pushed for two years prior. The board has the power to investigate complaints and propose policy changes for local law enforcement.

The Mayor and Commission will appoint nine voting members to the board. As part of its recommendations, Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement said that retired or active police officers be prohibited as candidates, to ensure that oversight and decisions are made “objectively, effectively, and with integrity." The group also emphasizes the need for proper funding and independence.
