Commissioner talks with WUGA

To say District 1 Commissioner Patrick Davenport has had an eventful last several months is an understatement. In September 2021, Davenport was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence. He was found in his car, with two flat tires and had a blood alcohol level three times the limit.

“I do want to apologize to my family members, friends and my colleagues because this has been very distracting, especially to the great people of District 1,” Davenport said.

Davenport reached out to WUGA to share his account of the incident. He spoke with my colleague Chris Shupe.

“I just made a really stupid, bad, fluke of a mistake. Unfortunately, it’ll be a moniker that will hang over my head for the rest of my life, but I have to accept my responsibilities.”

While dealing with the consequences and fallout from that DUI, Davenport said he has also experience unexpected support from many constituents.

“I would say 99% of the people were very supportive. People wrote me handwritten letters, they sent me flowers, sent me books, people called, Facebooked, constituents came by my house, gave me hugs and just said, you know, we were young and dumb.”

As a result of a plea deal, he has two misdemeanor charges, 40 hours of community service, a year of unsupervised probation and limited driving privileges. You can hear more from Commissioner Davenport about his legal woes, plans for reelection and more on this week’s edition of Athens News Matters.
