High school athletes in Georgia will now have to compete based on the sex listed at birth. Wednesday, the Georgia High School Association voted 62 to 0 to enforce that all athletes in the state must abide by the sex on their birth certificate. The GHSA was given the authority to make the decision after lawmakers passed a law on the final day of the legislative session giving the association that power.

The law, House Bill 1084, passed the general assembly along party lines. Governor Brian Kemp signed the measure into law Thursday, April 28th.

The change takes effect for the next school year. The measure also prohibits the teaching of divisive concepts.

Additional education legislation signed at the same time include HB 1178, the Parents’ Bill of Rights, Senate Bill B 226, which removes obscene materials from school libraries and HB 385 which allows retired teacher to return to the classroom in high-need areas.
