Kemp signs law allowing Georgians to get tax credits for donating to local law enforcement

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 361 into law Monday, creating a state tax credit that allows Georgians and corporations to target taxes they would normally pay into the state treasury to support local law enforcement.

The measure makes $75 million a year available in state income tax credits to Georgians who donate to local law enforcement foundations. The tax credits would be capped at $5,000 per individual ($10,000 per married couple) and 75% of a corporation’s tax liability.

The governor also signed SB 403 into law which aims to increase the number of teams trained in mental healthcare that can respond to emergency calls typically handled only by police officers. There are currently six similar programs operating across the state including one in Athens-Clarke County.
