Clarke County schools recognized nationally for STEM projects

Two science clubs from Clarke County Schools are being recognized with state and national awards for projects on energy education and conservation.

Students from Cedar Shoals High School and Hilsman and Clarke Middle Schools have been selected by The National Energy Education Development Project as Georgia and National Senior and Junior Schools of the year, respectively, for student projects submitted to a national STEM competition.

Cedar Shoals students worked on community conservation in their project, “The Three E’s: Energy, Education, Environment,” while the Science, Energy
and Adventure Team from Hilsman and Clarke presented theirs, “Preserve, Protect, & Power Through.”

The combined team from Hilsman and Clarke, partly under leadership by teacher and Athens-Clarke County Commission candidate Audrey Hughes, was a new experiment this year. Each school had previously been recognized by NEED in 2019 and 2021, so this time around, teachers decided t submit a project together.

In addition to supporting youth leadership in STEM, NEED develops guides and resources on energy education for classrooms. All three school teams are invited to the organization's national Youth Energy Conference next month.
