UGA-Created Website Combats Food Insecurity

Nicole Jordan

Operated by the University of Georgia’s Office of Service-Learning (OSL) through Engage Georgia, the Community Food Resources database lists daily food distribution sites, including their addresses, the kind of foods offered, and any recipient requirements.

During the pandemic, Athens-Clarke County officials authorized the funding for the database through the program, Athens Eats Together, which has served over 9,000 residents between September 2020 to April 2021.

Along with funding through Athens Eats Together, students in UGA geography professor Hilda Kurtz’s class gained research experience by compiling information on local food sharing sites for the website’s launch in March 2021. Student involvement remains essential to the website, as student workers with UGA’s OSL run monthly updates and contact over 300 community partners about upcoming events and resources.
