Two Barrow County Detention Officers have been arrested on charges related to smuggling contraband into the Barrow County Jail. According to a release from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, GBI agents and Barrow deputies arrested 21-year-old Hunter Lewis Perkins and 28-year old Xavier Jamal McWhorter, both of Winder. The pair turned themselves into authorities Monday afternoon. They were taken to the Barrow County Detention Center on charges of Bribery, Trading with Inmates without Consent of the Warden or Superintendent, Items Prohibited for Possession for Inmates, and Violation of Oath of a Public
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office became aware of allegations of wrongdoing by its own employees and contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, requesting that agency to conduct the investigation. “We moved very quickly on this and immediately contacted the GBI,” stated Sheriff Jud Smith. “The trust that exists between our office and the community is very important to all of us at the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. When someone violates that trust, we will act swiftly,” the Sheriff added.
