The Grit to Close Permanently Next Month

Atlanta Journal Constitution

After more than 3 decades in business, Athens cult-classic vegetarian fare, The Grit, will permanently close on October 7th.

An announcement posted to their official Facebook page on Thursday invited Athenians to bid the longstanding eatery farewell, stating “things have changed due to the pandemic and we’ve had to reevaluate our business goals.”

The Grit was founded in 1986 and moved into its historic Prince Avenue location in 1996. In 2020, it was one of the first Athens restaurants to convert a side street into a patio-area where guests could dine during the pandemic.

General manager Jay Totty told Flagpole magazine that the owners of The Grit plan to open Poquitos, a new taco restaurant, in the former Go Bar location. The opening date has yet to be determined.
