Georgia General Assembly kicks off 2023 session today

Georgia’s legislature gets back to work today, although it may be a slow start as some members have traveled to California to watch Georgia play for the national championship.

It is unclear, at this point, whether lawmakers, during an off election year, will tackle controversial issues such as abortion, sex education and transgender youth. There was some indication that legislators could move to restrict the distribution of abortion pills prescribed through telemedicine visits, instead, requiring a woman to get an in-person exam before a Georgia physician could prescribe the pills.

Legislators could consider restricting transgender surgeries on minors and further define what teachers can say about gender identity and sexual orientation in the classroom.
