In the next few months, two new lower-income, multi-family apartments may be coming to Athens.

At last night’s meeting, Athens-Clarke County Commissioners unanimously approved a rezoning request by Athens Land Trust, an affordable housing nonprofit. The request rezones 3.6 acres at 195 Bray Street from residential single-family to mixed density use.

Heather Benham, Athens Land Trust’s Executive Director, said the apartments will be reserved for lower-income Athenians.

Lacy Johnson, trustee of 195 Bray Street, said that using the land for affordable housing would honor her late husband, John Johnson, for his civil service.

Athens Land Trust’s development application is due next month. According to Benham, the trust will know whether they received funding in November.
