The University of Georgia golf course was designated as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, making it one of over 900 courses in the world to hold this designation.
A course must show a high level of environmental quality to gain this certification. This includes the areas of environmental planning; wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education; chemical use reduction and safety; and water conservation and water quality management.
UGA’s golf course made strides in expanding native vegetation, removing invasive plant species, providing quality wildlife habitat, and conducting water quality testing.
Scott Griffith, director of the course’s agronomy, completed the efforts for the land to obtain this certification.
