Athens-Clarke County District 9 Commissioner Ovita Thornton has been arrested for driving under the influence. According to an incident report from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, shortly after 2:30 pm on April 13, officers arrived on the scene at North Lumpkin Street and East Dougherty Street for a report of an accident with possible injuries. Officers found Thornton inside a vehicle in a bank parking lot, where she said she struck the curb while entering the lot
She was taken to the hospital for blood testing and later cited for DUI Drugs Less Safe and failing to yield while turning left. Thornton was also arrested for DUI in February. She struck a curb and pole in that incident. Thornton is currently serving as mayor pro tem during Mayor Kelly Girtz’s absence.
