USG officials consider tuition increase due to budget cuts

University System of Georgia officials are considering a tuition hike, among several options, to help fill a budget hole created by state lawmakers who unexpectedly cut funding for the next fiscal year.

As reported by the AJC, the Georgia Board of Regents typically make tuition decisions at the April meeting but have decided to wait until May to consider potential tuition and fee increases for the 26 system schools.

Other ideas include strategically allocating state funds to schools most in need and pulling from a portion of carry forward funds left over in college budgets. In addition to a reduction in state funding, most schools are facing other reduction because of falling enrollment. Last fall, system enrollment fell by 1.8% …and was the second straight of declining numbers.

University System officials did not say how big potential tuition increases could be.
