ACC seeks community input on proposed pet registration program

Athens Clarke County Animal Services

The Athens-Clarke County Government is seeking community input on their proposed Pet Registration Program through July 31.

If passed, the measure would require all dog and cat owners to register their pet and their rabies vaccine status with the county. The microchips could also hold additional owner-provided information such as medical conditions and photos.

Representatives from the Animal Services department spoke to the Legislative Review Committee in April. They said a database of pet information would help more lost pets be reunited with their owners, as well as limit the number of stray pets that reach their shelter.

The registration would have a fee, but the department may offer waivers for low-income owners.

Through Sunday, community members can submit input at Athens Clarke County Animal Services.
