Student Loan Debt Tops $1.6 Trillion

Millions of college students are heading back to school at college campuses around the nation, and many of those students will be taking our loans to pay for that college education. According to the Department of Education, at the end of the first quarter of 2023, outstanding college loan balances totaled nearly $1.64 trillion.

Jill Gonzalez is an analyst with the personal finance website WalletHub, which conducted a recent study on student loans.

Gonzalez says the average student loan debt in Georgia is nearly $26,000, and that debt could have long lasting effects, with some borrowers putting off marriage or buying a home.

The average student loan debt across the country amount was around $37,000.
