Hurricane Idalia

Hurricane Idalia, barreling toward the gulf coast of Florida and is anticipated to be a major Category 3 hurricane when it’s expected to hit the state Wednesday. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in 46 counties. Pam Knox is Agricultural Climatologist at the University of Georgia Extension. She says Idalia is expected to reach Southeast Georgia later Wednesday and it's possible the storm will be a Category 1 hurricane when it hits the state.

Knox says Athens could possibly see some wind and rain from the storm, but Southeast Georgia bear the brunt of the Idalia’s impact in the state., with heavy rains and strong winds forecast. In addition, counties under a Hurricane Warning can expect widespread power outages, downed trees and downed powerlines.

On Monday, Governor Brian Kemp ordered GEMA to activate the State Operations Center Activation in preparation for Idalia.
