Mayor Girtz Among Group Asking Legislators for Gun Violence Relief

Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz joining dozens of his colleagues around the state in sending a letter to Georgia lawmakers. The correspondence is seeking state help in combating gun violence. Girtz says they are asking for regulations put in place at the state level.
The Mayors are hoping to reduce gun homicides, suicides, and injuries. It also names Georgia as a top exporter of illegal weapons. Girtz says the city leaders have specific requests for state leaders.
He says they want to prohibit convicted felons from getting guns online or at gun shows, as well as prevent those who have committed domestic violence, or who may self-harm from getting guns. You can hear more on this week’s edition of Athens News Matters.
