The University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs will host Sen. Mitch McConnell and Sen. Joe Manchin at the inaugural Isakson Symposium on Political Civility.
Organizers of the symposium said McConnell and Manchin were selected because of their ability to navigate political polarization, their service to the country, and their friendship with Isakson.
“I cannot think of a better way to carry on our dear friend’s legacy than by promoting discussion on this important topic,” said McConnell.
The symposium is meant to remember the late Sen. Johnny Isakson who served as a senator for the state of Georgia over four decades. The symposium aims to guide future leaders to learn the importance of seeking common political ground.
Additionally, SPIA has launched the Johnny Isakson Legacy Fund “to honor and perpetuate Senator Isakson’s legacy of statesmanship and political civility.” The fund supports scholarships, internships, educational programs, research, and service opportunities provided by the school that advance common interest problem-solving and “political civility.”
The symposium will take place on Nov. 10, 2023, at 10 a.m. in the University of Georgia Chapel.
