President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 99th birthday Sunday. Carter marked the occasion with his wife Rosalyn, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Plains. Tributes poured in from round the state, nation, and world. Athens resident Gary Bertsch is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia who worked with President Carter. He spoke highly of the former president.

Bertsch met Carter when UGA and Delta Airlines awarded Carter with the Delta prize for global understanding.

The Carter Center received over 19,500 birthday wishes from over 100 countries. The longest-lived U.S. president, Carter entered home hospice care earlier this year.
