Athens-Clarke County Animal Services is extending a temporary suspension at the facility.
The Animal Services Department is not accepting owner-surrendered dogs or allowing dog adoptions until Wednesday, November 8th. This extension comes after a third dog recently brought to the shelter tested positive for canine parvovirus, or parvo. Parvo is a highly contagious virus that can affect all dogs, though unvaccinated dogs and puppies younger than four months old are the most at risk.
Stray dog intakes and owner reclaims of dogs, as well as cat adoptions and all intakes will continue due to separated areas at the facility and off-site holding locations.
Stray dogs tested positive for the parvo virus on October 14, October 20, and October 24. Animal Services contacted the Georgia Department of Agriculture and reported the results as required. The third dog was located in the off-site housing area at Athens-Ben Epps Airport for incoming stray dogs. All of the dogs were removed from the location while the space was thoroughly cleaned.
