CCSD to Hold Renaming Ceremonies for Two District Schools

The Clarke County School District is holding renaming ceremonies for two district schools Friday, November 3rd. A ribbon-cutting will take place at Johnnie Lay Burks Elementary school, formerly Chase Street Elementary, at 10 am.

A second ceremony will take place at 1 pm Friday at Bettye Henderson Holston Elementary, formerly Alps Road Elementary. Both women were among the first Black teachers to integrate the Clarke County teaching staff during the 1966-67 school year.

The Board of Education voted to rename the schools earlier this year. The schools will officially be referred to by their new names starting Wednesday, November 1st. The public is invited to attended both ceremonies. CCSD Superintendent Dr. Robbie Hooker, Mayor Kelly Girtz, BOE President Dr. LaKeisha Gantt, Ms. Burks, and Ms. Holston are scheduled to give remarks.

Alexia came to Athens from Macon where she served as the News Director and show host for WGXA TV. She's a career journalist and Savannah native hailing from the University of Michigan. However, Alexia considers herself an honorary UGA DAWG!
