An area organization is being recognized as one of the Georgia Water Coalition’s Clean 13 for 2023. The annual report highlights individuals, businesses, industries, nonprofit organizations, and governmental agencies who work to clean rivers. The Rural Georgia Protection Alliance, which includes Madison and Oglethorpe counties appealed to state legislators about runoff from foul smelling fertilizers, referred to as “soil amendments,” into area waterways, including the Savannah River.
The goal of the list is to recognize positive efforts and share the successful tactics so that others use similar strategies.
The Georgia Water Coalition is a collection of more than 285 conservation and environmental organizations, hunting and fishing groups, businesses, and faith-based organizations that worked to protect the state’s water since 2002. Athens-Clarke County made the list in 2021 at the community level for its clean energy efforts.
