New research from the University of Georgia shows a significant number of military families face food insecurity. The study found one in eight military families with at least one child reported using a food bank, pantries, or other charitable food distribution resources in the past year.
Dr. Catherine O’Neal is an assistant professor in Human Development and Family Science at UGA and lead author of the study. She says even more families may need those resources.
More than 8,300 Army and Air Force families were studied, with Army families 131% more likely to use a food bank that Air Force families. Additionally, the study found lower-ranking individuals, Asian, Black and multiracial families also more likely to seek food assistance as well.
