The Athens Clarke County Board of Commissioners voted in support of a proposed Habitat for Humanity development last night.
The board voted unanimously to support rezoning the area on Little Oak and Burney Streets, making way for the construction of 63 mixed-density residences. Named Micah’s Creek and located near the Firefly Trail, the development will provide much-needed access to affordable housing. In addition, families living in the development will voluntarily take part in a long-term study conducted by Habitat for Humanity, which will examine the effects of homeownership on youth educational outcomes. Commissioner Tiffany Taylor represents District 3, where Micah’s Creek will be constructed.
A controversial proposal for a halfway house on Peach Street was also discussed at Tuesday’s meeting, but was not brought to a vote.
