The percentage of drug deaths related to fentanyl in Clarke County is increasing. Coroner Sonny Wilson says 65% of drug overdose deaths this year in Athens have been related to fentanyl. That represents 49 overdose deaths with 32 related to fentanyl. That’s up from 61% last year and 56% in 2021.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, was developed as a strong painkiller. The drug is described as 100 times more powerful than morphine. On the streets, fentanyl is sold in various forms from pills to powder, and is often mixed with other dangerous drugs such as heroin. Athens-Clarke police can be made aware of illegal fentanyl use and possession by calling the confidential tip line at (706) 705-4775.
