Expect vehicle checkpoints in Athens Sunday through the early hours of New Year’s Day. ACC Police say they’ll be out in hopes drivers will slow down, focus on driving, and not drive while impaired. Police conducted a similar checkpoint on July 21, which was conducted in conjunction with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Piedmont Area Traffic Enforcement Network and included 29 officers from several agencies participating.
During that session, officers working at a checkpoint at the Athens Perimeter at Oconee Street stopped 158 vehicles. They issued citations ranging from child seat violations to drunk driving and felony possession of a firearm.
