As property values skyrocket around the state, legislators under the Gold Dome are exploring ways to hold property taxes down.
The Georgia Senate’s Finance Committee is holding a hearing this afternoon on a plan that would limit property value increases to three percent per year as a remedy to control rising property taxes. Meanwhile, House Speaker Jon Burns has floated a proposal to double the state’s homestead exemption, which would cut tax bills across the state by an estimated $100 million.
In Clarke County, rising property taxes brought in about $13 million dollars more in 2023 than in 2022 to public schools. Board of Education members kept the property tax rate flat, but significant growth in property values brought in over $121 million in property tax revenue to the Clarke County School District and an additional $89.7 million to the Athens-Clarke County government.
