ACC Commission to Deliberate Expansion of West Broad-Hawthorne Tax Allocation District Development

Nicole Jordan

The Mayor and Commission are set to discuss the West Broad – Hawthorne tax allocation district, or TAD, at Tuesday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

The Mayor and Commission will debate a proposed expansion of the West Broad-Hawthorne TAD Tuesday night.

TADs are specific areas slated for redevelopment funded by increased tax revenue from residents in the TAD area.

The Mayor and Commission currently oversee six TAD projects, including the Hawthorne and West Broad area. On Tuesday night, the Mayor and Commission will be asked to approve the expansion of this TAD to include parcels from the Beechwood Shopping Center, Sycamore Drive, and University Oaks Apartment Complex.

Proponents of the suggested expansion say it would allow the city to address traffic and storm water issues, increase housing densification, and more.

Athens-Clarke County’s Economic Development Department has recommended the Mayor and Commission approve the expansion.

The Mayor and Commission will also be discussing the East Downtown TAD during Tuesday night’s meeting.
