A Georgia Senate Committee has unanimously passed a bill creating a body to investigate veterans’ mental health and homelessness in the state. WUGA’s Martin Matheny has more.

SR 527 creates a Georgia Senate Study Committee to take a look at what the state is doing to care for mentally ill and homeless veterans. Senator Josh McLaurin of Atlanta is a co-sponsor of the resolution. He spoke at a meeting of the Senate Veterans, Military, and Homeland Security Committee in January.

“What I'm really excited about with this committee is that, based on my understanding of this subjects, is that this really hits the ground running in terms of the actual policies,” McLaurin told lawmakers.

Five Georgia Senators will serve on the committee which will meet throughout 2024. The resolution originally passed out of committee in late January, but a second vote had to be taken late last week due to a procedural error.

Martin Matheny is WUGA's Program Director and a host and producer of our local news program 'Athens News Matters.' He started at WUGA in 2012 as a part-time classical music host and still hosts WUGA's longest-running local program 'Night Music' which is heard on WUGA and GPB Classical. He lives in Normaltown with his wife, Shaye and dog, Murphy.
