UGA Executive Committee to consider proposals for new degree programs

The University of Georgia Executive Committee will consider proposals for the termination and creation of a number of majors, minors and certificates across disciplines at their upcoming February meeting.

The University Curriculum Committee submitted 16 proposals to the Executive Committee. Only three of the proposals proposed program termination, including deactivating the master’s program in Integrative Conservation and Sustainability and certificates in atmospheric sciences. The proposals state that the terminations are for the purpose of combining programs or restructuring curriculum and will not impact any current students or faculty.

There are seven proposals to create new majors, minors and certificates.

Franklin College of Arts and Sciences proposed five new minors, including four minors in the geology department and the creation of a Jewish Studies Minor. The college highlighted in the proposal that UGA and Georgia Tech are the only U.S. News and World Report top 30 public universities that don’t currently offer a Jewish Studies program.

Mary Frances Early College of Education proposed eight graduate certificates and two undergraduate certificates, or endorsement programs, to allow students to grow in a specific skill set, such as teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

The College of Engineering proposed a new Mechanical Engineering major for master’s students. The college currently offers a master’s degree in engineering with an emphasis in mechanical and electrical engineering. A graduate certificate in natural infrastructure has also been proposed.

In addition, Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications proposed a new graduate certificate in Crisis, Risk and Disaster Communication.

The proposals will be considered by the Executive Committee and can be rejected or placed on the agenda of the University Council, the governing body of faculty, staff and students that establishes university policies.
