ACC commissioners sign off on downtown property purchase

Nicole Jordan

Athens-Clarke County commissioners unanimously approved the purchase of six units at 440 College Avenue to provide more space for county offices. The property currently houses the Western Judicial Circuit Public Defender Office in one unit, and ACC staff anticipate moving other government employees into the space as well.

"We have some employees who don't have any space right now and we have other employees who are going to be migrating from their current space ultimately into a new municipal facility. But we're going to need a way station along the way," said Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz.

While leasing the six units will cost $2.95 million, county officials are also appropriating extra funds for renovation and maintenance, bringing the total price tag to slightly over $4 million.

Money for the purchase and renovation comes from unallocated federal funding.
