The body of a woman found yesterday afternoon at Lake Herrick has been identified as that of a former University of Georgia student who was currently a student at Augusta University’s nursing program in Athens, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The woman's name had not been released as of early Friday morning.
At a press conference Thursday evening, University of Georgia Police Chief Jeffrey Clark released scant additional information, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
According to Clark, the initial report came in at 12:07 when a friend of the deceased woman called police concerned about a friend who had gone jogging at Lake Herrick and had not returned. Police located the individual about 31 minutes later.
"The individual was unconscious and not breathing, and had visible injuries," said Clark. "Officers immediately began rendering medical aid. Emergency medical responders determined that the individual was deceased upon their arrival."
Clark said that a suspect or suspects have not been identified.
"When you have a suspect that's on the loose, there's always a danger, but there's no immediate danger at this time," he said.
Clark said that the Athens-Clarke County Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are assisting with the investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the UGA Police Department at 706-542-2200.
Clark said that this incident is unrelated to another death on Wednesday, when a UGA student died in Brumby Hall.
The University of Georgia has cancelled classes today.
