Georgia’s class of 2023 ranks in the top 20 of Advanced Placement scoring

Georgia ranks 16th nationwide in the rankings of percentage of students passing Advanced Placement exams. The data released by the College Board last week shows the class of 2023 outperformed students in many other southern states.

The AP program is one of many ways high school students can take college-level courses. Each course administers an optional exam at the end of the year with a grading scale of one to five.

Of the 33.6% of Georgia students who took an AP exam last year, 21% of them earned a score of three or higher. Students who achieve a three or higher can submit their scores to universities to receive college credit.

“I congratulate the class of 2023 on their excellent performance on the Advanced Placement exams," State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “This is another indicator that shows our state is on the road to academic recovery. I'm proud of these students, their teachers, and their families – and as a state, we will continue our efforts to offer a variety of options and opportunities that allow students to pursue accelerated learning while still in high school."

The state Department of Education estimates that Georgia students earned 369,708 college credits which saved students and families more than $102 million in potential college class costs.
