ACC Mayor and Commission Set to Discuss Traffic Signal Replacements

ACC Government

During this evening’s work session, the Mayor and Commission are set to discuss a traffic safety improvement project.

In 2022, voters in Athens-Clarke County approved the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST allocation, which included traffic safety infrastructure improvements.

At tonight’s meeting, the mayor and commission will discuss funding to upgrade traffic signals with newer technology. According to government officials, there are 40 intersections in Athens Clarke County whose signal equipment is 40 years or older. Aging equipment is more expensive to maintain and impacts public safety.

Due to budget constraints, TSPLOST administrators have selected four initial intersections to receive upgrades. Each intersection’s signal equipment is expected to cost $500,000 to replace.
