ACC Mayor and Commission to consider Juneteenth Event Coordinator

Nicole Jordan

At tonight’s special called session, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission will consider the approval of a Juneteenth Event Coordinator.

In 2021, President Joe Biden declared June 19th the Juneteenth Day of Observance, a holiday which celebrates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States.

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, or AADM, is the proposed event coordinator for this year’s Juneteenth celebration in Athens Clarke County, which is scheduled to take place on June 15th.

If the recommendation is approved, the local government will award the AADM $15,000 to carry out the planned event, which includes a Juneteenth Flag raising ceremony and a block party in College Square.

The Athens-Clarke County Human Relations Commission, which oversaw the event coordinator procurement process, has requested that the Commission approve the proposal.
