Students and employees of the University System of Georgia may have had their personal data stolen in a data breach originally reported last May.
In the incident, a cybercriminal site, CL0P, accessed files stored on the MOVEit software platform. The site could post the private data on its website, including full or the last four digits of Social Security Numbers, Dates of Birth, Bank account numbers and Federal income tax documents with Tax ID numbers.
Along with USG, many government, higher education and corporate customer sites use MOVEit to store private information. University system officials said that, "software operating at USG was immediately blocked upon detection of the breach on May 31, 2023, and has now been fully updated and secured."
Individuals who may have been affected by this breach can get complimentary assess to Experian IdentityWorks for 12 months, before July 31. It is also suggested that individuals review information from the Federal Trade Commission’s website on protecting one’s identity after a data breach.
